September 20, 2015

What a fantastic first full week of school we had! It's hard to believe that tomorrow is our 12th day of school together! Time really does fly when you are having fun! :)

On Friday we filled our bead jar for the very first time! I am so proud of each and every child for working so hard on their behavior and for making such wonderful choices each day! This week we will brainstorm and vote on what we would like to do to celebrate our outstanding accomplishment!

Shhhhhhh!!!!! It’s a Surprise
If possible, please help your child choose a shirt to send in for a project we will be working on for open house! Long sleeved shirts work best! All shirts will be returned unharmed after Open House is over! Thanks for your help!

Open House 2015!
This Thursday is Boyden School’s annual Open House Night! All friends and family are welcome to attend! I look forward to meeting all that can make it then!

Welcome to Ms. Storlazzi!
Last week Room 118 welcomed Ms. Storlazzi to our classroom! Ms. Storlazzi will be with us for the next 8 weeks or so as an Educational Support Professional until the position is permanently filled. Ms. Storlazzi is a wonderful addition to our Room 118 family and we look forward to her time with us in second grade!

Homework
The children did a wonderful job last week completing their homework and submitting it on Friday! I am so proud of each and every student for working hard and doing their best! Please let me know if homework ever becomes a burden or a source of frustration for your child. There are several ways I can differentiate the assignments so that homework will be just right for your student!

Media
Last Monday we took our very first trip of the school year to the Media Center! We loved listening to Mrs. Fucille read to us and were so excited to take out library books! Second graders are allowed to take out two library books as long as they are returned each week by Monday!

Literacy
This week in Literacy we will be reading the story, Exploring Space with an Astronaut by Patricia J. Murphy. While reading this nonfiction text we will continue to discuss our unit question, “What can we learn from exploring new places and things?” We will also discuss the weekly question, “Why would anyone want to explore space?” This week we will also be exploring the genre of Expository Nonfiction, reviewing long vowels, applying the comprehension skills of identifying the main idea and details of a text and learning about the grammar topic of subjects.

Math
This week in math we will be writing subtraction sentences to solve stories about comparing groups, writing related addition and subtraction facts, and using counters to model and solve addition and subtraction problems!

We had so much fun making Addition Man and Subtraction Man last week! These two tools helped us to identify the key words when adding or subtracting! Ask your child to tell you a few of the key addition and subtraction words that they learned!
