March 11, 2017

Happy Saturday everyone! I hope you are staying warm in this chilly winter weather we are having this weekend! It sure was a busy week in Room 118! Thanks for taking a peek!

Our "Thought of the Week"!

Room 118 Welcomes a New Student to our School Family!
This week Room 118 had the pleasure of welcoming Dylan into our Room 118 family! We feel so lucky to have him be apart of our class! Welcome to Boyden and Room 118 Dylan! :)

Social Studies
We will be taking our Social Studies quiz on the 7 continents this Thursday! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! :)

Congratulations to Eliana who participated in the MS Climb to the Top of Rockefeller Plaza last weekend! We are so proud of you! :)

Literacy
This week we will finish up our fourth unit of study in our literacy program by reading the story, Helen Keller and the Big Storm by Patricia Lakin. We will conclude our discussion of the unit questions, “How do things change? How do they stay the same?” We will discuss the weekly question, “How do changes in the weather affect us?” In literacy this week we will also review the genre of Narrative Nonfiction, apply vowels oo, ue, ew, and ui to our reading and spelling, practice applying the strategies of context clues and asking questions and discriminating between facts and opinions.

Last week in Literacy our story, I Like Where I am focused around the challenges of moving to a new place! In computer lab we created projects that shared how we would feel if we had to move!

Math
The children have been working SO hard over the past week in math to solve three-digit subtraction problems! This is always a challenging concept for second graders so please don't panic if your child comes home with a math paper that says, "We will keep working on this!" We are indeed going to keep working on this over the next few weeks while also weaving our next math topic, Geometry into our daily guided math centers! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

We continue to focus on using a growth mindset everyday in Room 118!

Wingmasters
On Wednesday we attended a very special presentation called Wingmasters! We got to see lots of different flying creatures and learn a great deal about each! Ask your child what their favorite winged creature was and why!

Star Student!
Congratulations to Isabelle who was our Star Student last week! We loved learning more about Isabelle from her All About Me poster and from the pictures that she brought from home! Keep up the amazing work Isabelle! :)
