September 15, 2018

What a fantastic first full week of school we had! It's hard to believe that Monday is our 12th day of school together! Time really does fly when you are having fun! 😃🎉

🎉 We have fun all day in Room 118! 🎉

Scholastic Book Order 📚
On Friday your child came home with a Scholastic book order for the month of September! If you are interested in ordering books for your child, all order forms and payment are due to school on Friday, September 28th! You can also place an order through the Scholastic Book website! More information about online ordering can be found on our classroom website under the Scholastic Book Order link! Happy Reading! 😄

Shhhhhhh!!!!! It’s a Surprise 👕
If possible, please help your child choose a shirt to send in for a project we will be working on for open house! Long sleeved shirts work best! All shirts will be returned unharmed after Open House is over! Thanks for your help!

Working together to play the Yarn Game! Ask your child how to play this game and what important lesson we can learn from participating in this activity!

Mystery Doug Monday! Ask your child who Mystery Doug is!

We learned a little bit more about Miss Ahearn this week!

Literacy 🕮✏
This week in Literacy we will be reading the piece, Exploring Space with an Astronaut by Patricia J. Murphy. While reading this nonfiction text we will continue to discuss our unit question, “What can we learn from exploring new places and things?” We will also discuss the weekly question, “Why would anyone want to explore space?” This week we will also be exploring the genre of Expository Nonfiction, reviewing long vowels, applying the comprehension skills of identifying the main idea and details of a text and learning about the grammar topic of subjects!

Relaxing during Quiet Time!

Learning all about rural, urban and suburban places with a BrainPOP!

This week in science we started to think about what we are curious about! Ask your child what questions they have about the world around them!

Sharing our questions on the document camera!

On Friday we took our very first trip to the Media Center! We had so much fun meeting our new Media Specialist, Mrs. Moses and picking out two books to take home! Students are asked to return or renew their media books by Friday so that they can select two new books to take out! Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions! Happy Reading! 📚

Daily 5 📗
Last week we began learning all about Daily 5! Daily 5 is a literacy center approach that provides students with the opportunity to build their reading and writing fluency, skills and stamina daily! We spent a great deal of time discussing how to pick a "just right book" and how to check our understanding when we read! We also looked at lots of different types of books and discussed which ones would be a great fit and which ones wouldn't! Ask your child to tell you what they learned this past week about Daily 5 and what their favorite part is so far!

Building Daily 5 Read to Self stamina!

We went to the Innovation Lab this week and used Bee Bots to practice reading words with short vowels! Thank you to our Technology Specialist, Mrs. Carroll for helping us with this!

This week in math we will be reviewing all of the concepts that were presented in Topic 1 of our math program and will take our very first test! We will then begin Topic 2, which focuses on addition strategies!
