September 12, 2021

What a wonderful 4 day week we had in Room 118! The children were so excited to jump into our second grade curriculum and did a fabulous job showing all that the learned in first grade! I can't wait for our first full, 5 day week together! 🎉

Room 118 Book Bakery 2021
On Tuesday, Room 118 participated in the first ever Book Bakery! We had a blast exploring the reading and writing genres that we will learn about this year in second grade! We also couldn't get enough of the yummy donut theme! Ask your child about the four different types of books we will read this year in second grade and which genre is their favorite! #donutyoujustloveagoodbook?!

This week we started to share all about our summer vacations! 🌞

Playing the game, "What's Changed?" in morning meeting!

We had our first Social Emotional Learning lesson with Mrs. Assiss this week!

Filling our book bags with lots of great books! 📚

In Writer's Workshop this week we read the book, "The Best Part of Me" and started to write our very own poems about the best part of ourselves. Be on the lookout for finished projects coming to a blog post soon!❤

We are already having so much fun in FUNdations! 😊

Show and Tell in Room 118
The class has been VERY excited about getting to know each other and sharing all about themselves! In response to this enthusiasm, if children would like to bring something small from home one time to quickly share with the class during morning meeting they are invited to do so! Please let me know if you have any questions!

Room 118 soldiers are hallway ready! Our goal? Walk to PE in a straight and silent line! I'm happy to report our mission was accomplished! 👍✔

We are building our stamina in Reader's Workshop! 📚

We are working so hard already!

Getting to know each other even better with a, "Find a Friend" scavenger hunt!

FUNdations is the phonics program we teach daily in our classroom. This week we will continue to practice the concepts presented in Unit 1! We will be reviewing concepts taught in first grade including digraphs, two letters that make one sound as in ship (sh); 2- and 3-letter consonant blends, as in trip (tr) and strip (str); digraph blends, as in the word lunch (nch); and blending and segmenting up to 6 sounds in one word, such as script. We will use our sound-tapping strategies to help us segment and blend sounds in words for both reading and spelling. We will also learn when to use k, c or ck when spelling words.

Reader's Workshop 📚
This week in Reader's Workshop we will practice reading in longer phrases and scooping up snap words. We will also talk about reading comprehension and use post-it notes to mark our thinking as we read.

Writer's Workshop 🖊
This week in Writer's Workshop we will review how to write a narrative by thinking, planning and writing across a page. We will also discuss how writers come up with an idea and then plan how their story will go by storytelling and acting out their story. Finally, we will review how to unfreeze the feelings and thoughts of a character.

Math 🖩
In math this week we will review how to write subtraction equations and solve separating and comparing stories. We will also connect addition and subtraction and use objects to problem solve.
