It was another busy, fun and productive week in Room 114! We had a blast learning about birds and why they have beaks in science, we loved playing, "Guess My Number" in math to practice place value concepts and we were so excited to use the TouchView during Morning Meeting and FUNdations on Tuesday! I look forward to another wonderful week of learning and fun ahead! π
Playing, "Guess My Number" in Math to practice place value concepts! This has quickly become a fan favorite in Room 114! π
Math Workshop in action!
I am blown away by the motivation, effort and perseverance that the children are putting forth toward their ST Math journeys! The class is way beyond the puzzle goal for this time of the year! Way to go ST Math Rock stars! You are incredible! Keep up the amazing job! JiJi and I are so proud of you! π§
We LOVE using the TouchView! Ask your child what types of activities we use the TouchView for to learn more about this awesome tool and how we use it in our classroom!
We continue to build our Room 114 classroom family each day! One way we do this is by practicing how to be a kind, supportive and encouraging friend and classmate! Throw in a little basketball fun and it is a positive experience for all! π
During our lesson with Mrs. Audet last week we talked about bullying and how we can be an "Upstander".
We had a blast in science last week discovering why birds have beaks. Ask your child the answer to this question to see what they learned! π¦
In Writer's Workshop we continue to write Small Moment stories! We have been reading examples of Small Moment stories during our daily read alouds to give us ideas for our own work! Keep up the amazing job writers! ✏

Reader's Workshop π
This week in Reader's Workshop we will talk about how readers use good habits for making sense of books. We will study pictures to better understand books, make our voices match what's happening in our stories, learn how to make inferences and practice retelling at the end of a book.
Writer's Workshop π
Our first unit in Writer's Workshop is Personal Narratives, which we also refer to as “Small Moment Stories”. These are stories your child will write about their own life, zooming in on a small moment in time. By focusing on a small moment in time, writers can add details to make that moment come to life with words. For example:
Big Topic: Riding my bike Small Moment: 1st time I rode without training wheels
Big Topic: My dogs Small Moment: The time when my dogs escaped through the
fence gate
Big Topic: Summer Small Moment: Collecting seashells at the beach with Grandma
Did you share any special times over the summer? Does your family have any special traditions? Has your family visited a special place or taken a trip? These memories are the seeds your child can use to “grow” a story.
This week we will continue to explore Unit 2 in our math program, which will focus on developing strategies with dice and dominoes! To learn more about the skills and concepts that we will be focusing on in our second math unit you can click here.
Science π
In science we will continue to learn about animals! This week we will answer the question, "Why do baby ducks follow their mother?" to explore the concepts of animal behavior and offspring survival.
