It's hard to believe that it is October already! Time sure is flying! The children have done a fabulous job over the last month settling in to second grade procedures and expectations! I couldn't be more proud of the effort and enthusiasm that they put forth each day! I look forward to another wonderful week of learning fun in Room 118!

Be a Star...Read! 

On Friday, Boyden’s annual reading incentive program began! This year the theme is, “Be a Star...Read!" On Friday, students came home with a letter explaining the incentive in more detail, as well as reading logs for the next four weeks! Reading logs are due back to school each Friday. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions as we begin this exciting program! Happy reading!!! :)

TEC in Our Classroom

Last week Ms. Carpenter from the TEC school (The Education Cooperative) came to visit Room 118! Starting soon, two of her students will be joining our classroom several times a week to participate in fun and exciting second grade activities! During her visit last week, Ms. Carpenter taught us about different ways that people can move and communicate! She even let us try out some of the very special tools that her students use! We are so excited to welcome her students into our classroom! 

Docent

A HUGE thank you to Mrs. Baumgardner for volunteering to teach the first Docent lesson of the year to our class! While Mrs. Baumgardner has so graciously agreed to teach the Docent lesson, she would love an extra set of helping hands for the end of the lesson which involves a very exciting art project! If you are available on Monday, October 19th from 1:00PM-2:00PM and are interested in helping out please let me know! 

Literacy 

This week we will be reading the text, A Walk in the Desert by Caroline Arnold and will be discussing the questions, “What can we learn from exploring new places and things?” and “What can we learn by exploring the desert?” We will also discuss the genre of Expository Nonfiction, practice reading words with inflected endings, identify the main idea and details within a text and determine the structure of a story. 

Math 

This week in math children will practice adding three addends and adding with 10. We will take our topic 2 test by the end of the week and will begin our third topic next week which focuses on subtraction strategies!
