January 17, 2016

I hope that everyone is enjoying a wonderful long weekend! It’s hard to believe that we are already nearing the end of January! I couldn’t be more proud of the effort and hard work each student continues to put forth every day in our classroom! I look forward to another week of learning fun in Room 118!

This week we talked about where we live as an introduction to our Social Studies unit on the 7 continents! Ask your child to tell you what planet, continent, country, state and town we live in!

Literacy
This week in Literacy we will be reading the story, A Weed is a Flower: The Life of George Washington Carver by Aliki. This is the last story in our third unit! This week we will conclude our discussion on the unit question, “What does it mean to be creative?” and will discuss the weekly question, “Where do creative ideas come from?” We will also learn about the genre of Biography, practice reading words with comparative endings, apply the comprehension skill of cause and effect and learn more about the comprehension strategy of monitoring and fixing up our understandings while reading!

Social Studies
Last week we continued to discuss the very important life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. in anticipation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday. Children were asked to write about a dream that they have for our country which they turned into a KidPix project during computer lab! Ask your child to share what they learned about MLK and what their dreams for our country are! See a few of our dreams below! :)

Math
This week we will begin topic 9 which focuses on two-digit subtraction. We will begin this unit by practicing how to regroup 1 ten for 10 ones and using models to subtraction two and one digit numbers.

Star Student
Congratulations to Audrey who was our Star Student last week! We loved learning more about Audrey from her All About Me poster and from the pictures and objects that she brought from home! Keep up the amazing work Audrey! :)
