January 23, 2016

I hope that everyone is having a fantastic weekend and staying warm and safe in the snow! While last week was one day shorter than usual, we packed all four days full of fun in Room 118! Take a peek below to see what we were up to! :)

Go Pats!!!

Welcome!
Last week we welcomed Miss Jessica Verbic into our Room 118 family! Miss Verbic will be permanently fulfilling the ESP (Educational Support Professional) position in our classroom! We are so excited to have Miss Verbic in our classroom and look forward to working with her this year! :)

Literacy
This week in literacy we will not be starting a new story but will be reviewing the concepts and skills presenting in our third unit. Since we will be taking this week to review, we will not be taking a spelling test on Friday! Next week, we will begin our fourth unit of stories and pick back up with our spelling tests! Please let me know if you have any questions!

Social Studies
In Social Studies we have been discussing where we live! Last week we took a closer look at our country of America and our state of Massachusetts! We also learned about cardinal directions (North, East, South, West) and map symbols! This week we will begin to look at the continents and major oceans of the world!

Math
Last week in math we began Topic 9 which focuses on double digit subtraction! Just like addition, students will learn and practice a relatively new computation strategy that will provide them with a much deeper and clearer understanding of place value and the process of subtraction. In addition this strategy is called Partial Sums and in subtraction this strategy is called Partial Differences. See the picture below to see this strategy in action!

Star Student!
Congratulations to Ryan who was our Star Student last week! We loved learning more about Ryan from his All About Me poster and from the pictures that he brought from home! Keep up the amazing work Ry! :)

Dates to Remember:
