September 18, 2016

What a fantastic first full week of school we had! It's hard to believe that tomorrow is our 12th day of school together! Time really does fly when you are having fun! :)

Room 118 is Celebrating!!!
On Friday we filled our bead jar for the very first time! I am so proud of each and every child for working so hard on their behavior and for making such wonderful choices each day! Our class brainstormed a list of possible celebration ideas and voted on having a Pajama, Stuffed Animal, Movie Day! Children are invited to wear their pajamas and bring a stuffed animal to school this Friday, September 23rd to celebrate! Students are also more than welcome to bring in any G rated movies from home that they might like to watch for the movie part of our celebration!

Shhhhhhh!!!!! It’s a Surprise
If possible, please help your child choose a shirt to send in for a project we will be working on for open house! Long sleeved shirts work best! All shirts will be returned unharmed after Open House is over! Thanks for your help!

Literacy
This week in Literacy we will be reading the story, Exploring Space with an Astronaut by Patricia J. Murphy. While reading this nonfiction text we will continue to discuss our unit question, “What can we learn from exploring new places and things?” We will also discuss the weekly question, “Why would anyone want to explore space?” This week we will also be exploring the genre of Expository Nonfiction, reviewing long vowels, applying the comprehension skills of identifying the main idea and details of a text and learning about the grammar topic of subjects.

Daily 5
Last week we began learning all about Daily 5! Daily 5 is a literacy center approach that provides students with the opportunity to build their reading and writing fluency, skills and stamina daily! We spent a great deal of time discussing how to pick a "just right book" and compared this process to picking the right pair of shoes! We also looked at lots of different types of books and discussed which ones would be a great fit and which ones wouldn't! Ask your child to tell you what they learned this past week about Daily 5 and what their favorite part is so far!

Math
This week in math we will be reviewing all of the concepts that were presented in Topic 1 of our math program and will take our very first test! We will then begin Topic 2, which focuses on addition strategies!
