December 11. 2016

Happy Sunday! I hope that everyone is having a great weekend! The next two weeks are sure to be busy and fun in Room 118 with the holiday season upon us! I look forward to the wonderful weeks ahead! :)

Practicing our typing skills in computer lab!

Holiday Traditions Projects
What a wonderful job the children have done completing their holiday traditions projects! The ginger breads look fantastic and are so creative! Last week in school we started to use the graphic organizers completed at home to write about how we celebrate the holidays ! This week we will begin to discuss how holiday traditions have changed over the years by using the family letters that we have received so far! Thank you so much for all of your help and support with this very special project!

Progress Reports
Progress reports will be coming home with your child on Friday, December 16th! It is important to review your child’s progress report with them and celebrate all that have accomplished this term! It is also a great time to discuss areas of focus or improvement. When viewing your child’s progress report it is important to remember that the skills shown on the report are what we expect our students to master by the end of second grade. Being that it is only the first term, it is completely appropriate for students that are doing well to earn scores of 1 or 2 as they are working towards mastering each standard by the end of the year. Some standards we have yet to cover in our curriculum so it would not be possible for students to have already mastered them as is the case with many of our science, social studies and writing standards. On your child's progress report you will see a comment that I have written to summarize your child's growth this term. We are asked to write these comments in a way that aligns to the report card standards and in 450 characters so I apologize if my comments seem a little brief and general! After reviewing your child’s progress report please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions that you may have! I am so proud of each child for working very hard this term and look forward to our second term together!

This past week in literacy we learned all about author's purpose and completed a sort using scholastic book magazines to practice identifying an author's purpose by using a book cover! Ask your child to tell you the three reasons why an author might write a book to see all that they have learned!

Math
The children have been working very hard in math to apply the mental subtraction strategies explored in Topic 7 of our math program! This week we will be subtracting multiples of ten and solving problems with missing or extra information. As always we will continue to work on our addition and subtraction facts in class as well!

Literacy
In Literacy we will be starting our third unit of stories which focus around the essential question, “What does it mean to be creative?” This week we will be reading the story, Pearl and Wagner: Two Good Friends by Kate McMullan. Through reading this story we will be discussing the weekly question, “How do inventors turn ideas into inventions?” We will also be discussing the genre of Animal Fantasy, applying the long e sound to letters e, ee, ea and y while reading, identifying author’s purpose and determining the story structure of a text.
