September 24, 2021

It was another busy and fun week in Room 118! We finished our first unit in FUNdations, continued to build our stamina in Reader's Workshop, reviewed addition strategies in math and added to our small moment stories in Writer's Workshop! Keep up the amazing work Room 118! ❤

This week in one of our SEL classes with Mrs. Aissis we role played what to do if you don't agree with someone! Ask your child what strategies they can use to compromise with a friend to see what they learned!

This week in Reader's Workshop we focused on what strategies we can use to read tricky words that we might come across in our books! Ask your child about the strategies we learned about! 📚

Expectations in Room 118

We have been talking a lot during these early weeks of school about our goals for this school year. Students have worked hard to discover topics they’ll learn, reflect on what they are able to do now that they couldn’t do last year, and build excitement for what is to come this year!

Some students have set specific goals to develop an academic or social skill, and others have hopes that they will grow as learners and contributing community members. All of our hopes and dreams are important. To create a climate where each of us can achieve our goals, we created these rules to follow for our classroom.

  1. Care for ourselves and have self control.

  2. Care for others and be respectful of teachers and other students.

  3. Care for our classroom and school.

  4. Put forth our best effort and persevere.

We understand that our choices and actions directly impact ourselves, our classmates and our ability to learn and grow. If we choose to not follow the expectations of our classroom we understand that there will be consequences for our actions.

I look forward to working together to create a safe and caring community of learners in our classroom and so greatly appreciate your support! Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about these rules or my approach to classroom discipline. Please be on the lookout for a hard copy contract of the rules for our classroom coming home with your child this week.

Let’s make each day in our classroom a GREAT day! 😃

Reading the book, What if Everybody Did That? allowed us to

discuss what would happen if everyone made an unexpected choice.

This week we signed the behavior contract for our classroom! ✏

Finally, we will learn five new sounds: ar, er, ir, or and ur.

Reader's Workshop 📚
This week in Reader's Workshop we will learn about strategies readers have for figuring out brand new words and how we can check ourselves and our reading.

Writer's Workshop 🖊
Our first unit in Writer's Workshop is Personal Narratives, which we also refer to as “Small Moment Stories”.  These are stories your child will write about his/her own life, zooming in on a small moment in time.  By focusing on a small moment in time, writers can add details to make that moment come to life with words.  For example:

Big Topic: Riding my bike            Small Moment: 1st time I rode without training wheels

Big Topic: My dogs            Small Moment: The time when my dogs escaped through the

                                                       fence gate

Big Topic: Summer             Small Moment: Collecting seashells at the beach with Grandma

Did you share any special times over the summer?  Does your family have any special traditions?  Has your family visited a special place or taken a trip?  These memories are the seeds your child can use to “grow” a story.

I kindly ask you to spend a few minutes talking with your child about the people,, places, things, and experiences that are important to them.  Encourage your child to zoom in on a small moment in time. Your child can use these ideas throughout our Personal Narrative unit!

This week in Writer's Workshop we will generate ideas for writing, explore tiny topic notebooks and stretch out our small moment stories!

Math 🖩
In math this week we will review adding in any order, making a 10 to add, drawing a picture to problem solve and subtracting 0, 1, and 2.

This coming week we are going to start our Guided Math centers! Guided Math is an approach that provides all instruction in small groups. When students are not working with a teacher to learn new skills or concepts, they are participating in math games that will build their fact fluency, completing projects that target key math concepts, and using the computer to practice skills learned in class! Guided Math is such a fun part of our day and allows me the opportunity to support and challenge students at their individual level. I am so excited to start Guided Math centers this week and hope that your child will enjoy them as much as I do! 👍

Science/Social Studies 🌎
This week in Social Studies we will begin to explore maps and learn about a compass rose.
