October 3, 2021

It's hard to believe that it is October already! Time sure is flying! The children have done a fabulous job over the last month settling into second grade procedures and expectations! I couldn't be more proud of the effort and enthusiasm that they put forth each day! I look forward to another wonderful week of learning fun in Room 118! 🙂

Open House
It was SO wonderful to meet so many of you at Open House last Tuesday night! I so greatly appreciate you taking the time out of your busy day to come visit and learn a bit more about Room 118! Please see the presentation I gave on Tuesday night linked below! Please reach out with any questions or if you have any trouble accessing the document! Thank you so much for your continued support and for everything that you do! Room 118 is truly a special place to learn, teach and grow!

The Week Ahead
As a part of Ms. Almeida's student teaching experience, she will be taking over my responsibilities as the classroom teacher this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday! I will still be in the building and available if anything should come up! I will still be checking and responding to emails so please don't hesitate to reach out! Please let me know if you have any questions!

We loved learning more about Ms. Almeida this week! Thank you for sharing your All About Me poster and some pictures with us! ❤ #welcometotheroom118family!

Headphones
If your student has their own set of headphones at home that they would like to bring in to use when we are participating in ST Math they are encourage to do so! If your child does not have headphones, not to worry! Please do not go out and buy them some! We will make sure each child has access to their own pair of headphones in our classroom! Thank you so much!

Friendship Soup! 🍜
Monday was the perfect day to make some friendship soup! Thank you to our Technology Specialist, Mrs. Carroll for this awesome idea! Ask your child what they put in their friendship soup and what qualities a good friend has to see what they learned! #inaworldwhereyoucanbeanythingbekind.

In Social Studies this week we continued to talk about maps and globes! We learned all about cardinal directions and a compass rose! 🌎

On Wednesday Mrs. Miles taught our Reader's Workshop mini lesson on figuring out the middle part of tricky words while we are reading! Thank you Mrs. Miles for all of your help and hard work! Room 118 LOVES when you come to visit and teach! 📚

Sharing our word solving strategies with the class during a Reader's Workshop closure!

We continued to talk about kindness and friendship this week in our read alouds and with a Scholastic News article!

In Writer's Workshop we've been working hard to write small moment stories! This week we learned all about Tiny Topic Notebooks and how we can use  them to record writing ideas! Ask your child what they have written in their notebook so far to learn more about the small, meaningful moments in their lives! ✏

This week we read the beautiful book, Owl Moon by Jane Yolen to see what we could learn from a mentor author that we could apply in our own writing! Ask you child about this book to see what it is all about! 🦉

Media 📚
On Friday we took our very first trip to the Media Center to visit Mrs. Moses! We had a BLAST exploring and picking out books! Thank you Mrs. Moses for all of your hard work and for having us! Library books are due back to school every Friday! Unfortunately, if a child does not return their books they cannot take out new books. Happy Reading!

Finally, we will finish learning about five new sounds: ar, er, ir, or and ur.

Reader's Workshop 📚
This week in Reader's Workshop we will learn about the intentions of authors and not just notice the craft moves of an author but try them ourselves!

Writer's Workshop 🖊
Our first unit in Writer's Workshop is Personal Narratives, which we also refer to as “Small Moment Stories”.  These are stories your child will write about his/her own life, zooming in on a small moment in time.  By focusing on a small moment in time, writers can add details to make that moment come to life with words.  For example:

Big Topic: Riding my bike            Small Moment: 1st time I rode without training wheels

Big Topic: My dogs            Small Moment: The time when my dogs escaped through the

                                                       fence gate

Big Topic: Summer             Small Moment: Collecting seashells at the beach with Grandma

Did you share any special times over the summer?  Does your family have any special traditions?  Has your family visited a special place or taken a trip?  These memories are the seeds your child can use to “grow” a story.

I kindly ask you to spend a few minutes talking with your child about the people,, places, things, and experiences that are important to them.  Encourage your child to zoom in on a small moment in time. Your child can use these ideas throughout our Personal Narrative unit!

This week in Writer's Workshop we will write with detail to magnify a small moment, craft powerful endings, and reread like detectives making sure our writing makes sense and sounds right!

Math 🖩
In math this week we will be using addition facts to 18 to help us subtract.

This coming week we are going to start our Guided Math centers! Guided Math is an approach that provides all instruction in small groups. When students are not working with a teacher to learn new skills or concepts, they are participating in math games that will build their fact fluency, completing projects that target key math concepts, and using the computer to practice skills learned in class! Guided Math is such a fun part of our day and allows me the opportunity to support and challenge students at their individual level. I am so excited to start Guided Math centers this week and hope that your child will enjoy them as much as I do! 👍

Science/Social Studies 🌎
This week in Social Studies we will continue to learn about how to read a map.
