October 10, 2021

Happy Sunday! I hope that everyone is having a great long weekend! I can't wait for another spectacular week in second grade! I know that we will have four fabulous days together!😃

Parent/Teacher Conferences 📆
It's hard to believe that Parent/Teacher conferences are just around the corner! The online conference scheduler opened a few weeks ago! If you are unable to make any of the time slots still available, please contact me as soon as possible! I'd be more than happy to meet during a time that is convenient for you! I look forward to conferencing with you soon! 😃

Our read alouds this week focused on small moment stories! Ask your child what small moments they are writing about in Writer's Workshop to see what they are up to! 🎢

Small moment stories and Social Studies came together this week! After reading, The Camping Trip the children practiced their map skills with the, "Our Campground"
activity! ⛺

Sharing our writing in Writer's workshop! ✏

On Monday your child came home with their very own At Home Math Box! This box is a great place for the children to store the math games that I send home each week! While it is strongly encouraged that homework logs come back to school on Friday, it is recommended that math games stay at home so that they can be used for continued practice! Keep up the great work mathematicians!

We continue to discuss the importance of kindness!

On Friday we brainstormed ways that we can be kind and show kindness to others! The children picked their favorite ideas to use in a kindness craftivity! Ask your child how they can be kind to see what they are understanding about this important topic! #wegetakickoutofbeingkind 🏈

Science
This week we kicked off our science unit on animals by participating in an anchor phenomenon! The anchor phenomenon for this unit is a cave north of San Antonio, Texas, that has an unusually large amount of animal poo covering the cave floor. Throughout the unit, students gather details about the mysterious type of animal that lives there.

During the introduction, students generate observations and questions about the phenomenon and create an initial conceptual model to explain the phenomenon.

Students will gather clues during and after each lesson in this unit to help them improve their explanations. It is important to encourage students to recognize that even if they don't know the perfect answer yet, they are going to learn a lot throughout the unit and will have an opportunity to change or add to their first explanation!

Headphones
If your student has their own set of headphones at home that they would like to bring in to use when we are participating in ST Math they are encourage to do so! If your child does not have headphones, not to worry! Please do not go out and buy them some! We will make sure each child has access to their own pair of headphones in our classroom! Thank you so much!

On Monday we participated in a full Guided Math Workshop for the first time! The mathematicians did a wonderful job of staying focused and working hard! Take a peek below to see what Guided Math workshop looks likes and sounds like in our classroom!

Reader's Workshop 📚
This week in Reader's Workshop we will learn about how readers think about how a whole book clicks together. We will also notice masterful writing, and think about what an author wants to teach us.

Writer's Workshop 🖊
This week in Writer's Workshop we will write with detail to magnify a small moment, craft powerful endings, and reread like detectives making sure our writing makes sense and sounds right!

Math 🖩
In math this week we wrap up our third topic of study by solving two-question problems. We will then begin to learn about place value by reviewing models for tens and ones.

Science/Social Studies 🌎
This week in Social Studies we will continue to learn about how to read a map. In science we will answer the question, "How many different types of animals are there?" In this lesson, students examine how scientists organize animals into groups based on their characteristics. In the activity, Animals Sorting Game, students study animal traits and use these traits to sort animal cards into mammals, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates. Students are then challenged to make decisions about animals that don’t fall neatly into any of those categories.
