Happy Friday! It was a fabulous four day week in Room 118! We continue to learn, grow and have so much fun each and everyday! I hope your week was just as amazing! Enjoy the weekend ahead! 😃 #it'ssupposedtosayhooray #idon'tknowwheretheywent
Spirit Days in Room 118!
The children have been working SO incredibly hard over the last few weeks of school that Ms. Almeida and I have decided to host a pajama party to celebrate! The children are invited to wear their pajamas to school on this Friday, October 22nd! Keep up the amazing work Room 118! You continue to amaze, inspire and make us so very proud! ❤
Through read alouds and discussions over the last few months of school, the students of Room 118 have become kindness experts! The collaboration and teamwork among students to show kindness to others has been incredible! We are now (unofficially) being referred to as Team Kind around Boyden School! To show our Team Kind pride, children are invited to wear a sports jersey to school on Tuesday when we will be taking a very official team picture! Keep up the awesome work Team Kind! #wegetakickoutofbeingkind
Homework Logs
While I will be sending home a homework log on Monday with each child, I will not be sending home any new math games or activities this week. My hope is that students can continue to play games that they have been enjoying or catch up on a game that they haven't been able to play yet! Please let me know how homework is going for your child so that I can best support them!
Through a Scholastic News article, we learned all about author Yuyi Morales! Ask your child what they learned about Ms. Morales to check their understanding of the article! 📚
A friendly reminder that Friday is our Media Center day! Readers are encouraged to bring their media books back to school by Friday so that they can take out and enjoy new books! Happy reading! 📚
Science
This week in science we challenged ourselves to answer the question, "How many different types of animals are there?" In this lesson, students examined how scientists organize animals into groups based on their characteristics. In the activity, Animals Sorting Game, students studied animal traits and used these traits to sort animal cards into mammals, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates. Students were then challenged to make decisions about animals that don’t fall neatly into any of those categories.
It's a wrap on our first unit in Reader's Workshop! We learned so many important reading strategies and built so much reading stamina over the last 29 days of school! We have so much to celebrate! Way to go Room 118 Readers! 🥳
Some readers were very excited to jump up on stage and share their favorite books that they have enjoyed over the last few weeks!
In Writer's Workshop this week we worked hard to set writing goals and to make plans for writing time. We also really focused on revising with intent! Keep up the wonderful work writers! ✏
We continue to be inspired by mentor authors during our daily read alouds!
In Reader's Workshop daily conferences, we have started to focus on individual reading goals for each student! I am so excited to share your child's readings goals with you during Parent/Teacher conferences over the next two weeks!
Thinking about what authors want to teach us with Mrs. Miles! 🤔
This week we shared some of our family traditions after reading the book, Fry Bread by Kevin Noble Maillard!
This week we got the "Teacher Table" component of our math workshop up and running! This is such an important and valuable time to support each child and what they need! Keep up the great work mathematicians!

Writer's Workshop 🖊
This week in Writer's Workshop we will review how to craft a powerful beginning, how to effectively use transition words to make our writing flow and how to use dialogue to make our writing really come to life!
Math 🖩
In math this week we continue to explore place value by learning to find 10 more and 10 less than a given number, build numbers to 1,000, count hundreds, tens and ones, and read and write numbers to 1,000.
Science/Social Studies 🌎
This week in science we will answer the question, "Why do frogs say 'ribbit'?" This lesson is a case study in biodiversity using the frogs of North America. In the activity, Who's Calling?, students learn to identify frogs by their unique calls and investigate which of two locations has a greater variety of frogs. After listening to recordings of frog calls, students create words that will remind them of the sounds, and then use those words to identify frog sounds in different environments.
