January 13, 2023

It was another busy week in Room 114 as we continued to build our nonfiction reading fluency in Reader's Workshop, write nonfiction pieces on a topic of our choice in Writer's Workshop, add and subtract on a number line in math and learn about Martin Luther King Jr. in Social Studies! I hope everyone enjoys a wonderful long weekend! Thank you so much for all that you do! 😊

This week your child came home with a short story called, "King Sam". This story is an on-level piece that uses the phonics rules we have learned thus far in FUNdations. Have your child read their copy of "King Sam" to you to see how their decoding and fluency skills are progressing!

Playing a new game in Math Workshop on the Touchview!

There are so many things that we are "grapeful" for in 2023!

We continued to learn about our brains this past week with Class Dojo videos! We learned that making mistakes actually helps our brain to grow! We also learned about the power of yet!

In science, we wrapped up our unit on animals by learning about camouflage!

In Reader's Workshop we learned that nonfiction readers are always growing their vocabularies by being word collectors!

In Social Studies we learned about the life and incredible contributions of Martin Luther King Jr. The children are asked to perform an act of kindness on Monday to mark the day.

FUNdations Workshop in action!

On Thursday our math coach, Mrs. Rinaldi visited Room 114 to help us move JiJi along our ST Math puzzle progress tracker! We made SO much progress this week and were thrilled to hear that our classroom is the leader of ST Math puzzles for the WHOLE SCHOOL! Way to go ST Math mathematicians! Your hard work, effort and perseverance is paying off! Keep up the amazing job!

We earned the coveted "big JiJi" for being the class with the most puzzles completed in the WHOLE SCHOOL!

🌟Star Student🌟
Congratulations to Jonathan who was our Star Student last week! We loved learning more about Jonathan from his All About Me poster and from the objects that he brought from home! Keep up the awesome work Jonathan! You are such an important and valued member of our Room 114 family! ❤

Our Specials this Week
Please see our schedule below for the upcoming week!

Tuesday (Day 2) Art
Wednesday (Day 3) Music
Thursday (Day 4) Media/STEM
Friday (Day 1) PE

FUNdations
In FUNdations this week we will continue to focus on blending, reading and spelling words with the glued sounds: ang, ing, ong, ung, ank, ink, ong and unk. We will also learn to read and spell the heart words: why, by, my, try, put, two, too, very, also, some and come.

Reader's Workshop 📚
In Reader's Workshop this week we will continue to learn about nonfiction reading strategies! We will discuss how nonfiction readers read each page of a book closely. We will also learn that readers learn more by chatting with other readers about their books and readers reread to deepen their understandings.

Writer's Workshop 🖊
Our focus will continue to be on the genre of nonfiction in Writer's Workshop! We will talk about how writers think of nonfiction topics to write about and will then start writing pieces of our very own!
Math 🖩
In math we will continue to practice adding and subtracting on a number line through fun games and activities.

Thank you so much for all of your

support and for everything that you do!

I look forward to our continued work together in 2023!

Warmly,

Jill 🎉
