September 10, 2023

What a wonderful 4 day week we had in Room 114! The children were so excited to jump into our first grade curriculum and did a fabulous job of showing all that they learned in kindergarten! I can't wait for our first full, 5 day week together! 🎉

Last week we continued to get to know each other and to build our Room 114 classroom family! ❤

Last week in our phonics program, FUNdations, we reviewed the sounds and formations of the letters t, b, f, n, m, i and u using fun games and activities! The children did a fantastic job of taking their time to form their letters neatly and correctly! ✏

We put the "fun" in FUNdations!

Exploring some of the math tools we will use this year during Math Workshop!

As a class we brainstormed and decided on the promises (rules) that we will have for our classroom! Be on the lookout for a copy of our classroom promises coming home with your child this week!

We had a blast greeting each other in Morning Meeting last week using lots of different games and tools! Ask your child what they need to do to greet someone politely to see what we practiced! (Make eye contact, turn your body to face the person you are greeting, and sound friendly!) ✋

We participated in our first science lesson last week which focused on the question, "What does a scientist do?" Ask your child about the different parts of a scientist's job to see what they learned!

Last week our math lessons centered around a Popsicle theme! We had so much fun graphing our favorite Popsicle flavors, collecting and analyzing data!

After reading the book, "Dream Big" and talking about our Hopes and Dreams for the school year, we just had to cheer each other on as everyone got two shots in our classroom basketball hoop! Ask your child what their goal for first grade is to see what they are going to focus on this year! 🏀

We explored our first Scholastic News issue of the school year last week in Social Studies! Our very first article focused on kindness!

Participating in classroom discussions is so much more fun when you get to share your ideas into a golden microphone!

"Party Animals of the Day" started using special seating this week! Ask your child what "Party Animals of the Day" are and what special things they get to do in our classroom!

On Friday we reviewed the math concept of tally marks! Ask your child what tally marks are and how to show the number 5 using tally marks to see what they remember!

When you've been in the middle of a heat wave and your math lessons for the week have a Popsicle theme, you just HAVE to have a Popsicle Party! #firstgradeisfabulous!

Getting to know each other and working together through play during "Free Choice Friday!"

In Unit 1 we will be setting the stage for all of the future units. We will be reviewing and teaching the letter names, keywords, sounds and lowercase letter formations of the letters a-z.

Reader's Workshop 📚
This week in Reader's Workshop we will continue to talk about how readers take a sneak peek to get ready to read. We will also discuss how when readers finish a book they do something. This could mean stopping and remembering the book, looking back and thinking the book over, telling someone about the book or going back to favorite parts.

Writer's Workshop 🖊
This week in Writer's Workshop we will review the parts of sentence and practice writing complete sentences of our own!

Math 🖩
In math this week we will use a number line to count forward and backwards by 5's and learn to group and count tally marks. We will also practice counting by 2's, make our own number racks, and learn a new game called, "Show Me". To learn more about our first math unit you can click here.

Science/Social Studies 🌎
This week in science and social studies we will learn about who invented school. We will also continue to discuss what makes each of us special and unique through our daily read alouds!
