December 13, 2015

I hope that everyone is enjoying a wonderful weekend! It's hard to believe that with such nice weather that it is actually December! I look forward to another busy and fun week in second grade! :)

Holiday Traditions Projects
What a wonderful job the children have done completing their holiday traditions projects! The ginger breads look fantastic and are so creative! Last week in school we started to use the graphic organizers completed at home to write about how we celebrate the holidays ! This week we will begin to discuss how holiday traditions have changed over the years by using the family letters that we have received so far! Thank you so much for all of your help and support with this very special project!

Signing Boyden's "We Fit Together" board in honor of Inclusion week!

Progress Reports
Progress reports will be coming home with your child on Thursday, December 17th. It is important to review your child’s progress report with them and celebrate all that have accomplished this term! It is also a great time to discuss areas of focus or improvement. When viewing your child’s progress report it is important to remember that the skills shown on the report are what we expect our students to master by the end of second grade. Being that it is only the first term, it is completely appropriate for students that are doing well to earn scores of 1 or 2 as they are working towards mastering each standard by the end of the year. Some standards we have yet to cover in our curriculum so it would not be possible for students to have already mastered them as is the case with many of our science, social studies and writing standards. On your child's progress report you will see a comment that I have written to summarize your child's growth this term. We are asked to write these comments in a way that aligns to the report card standards and in 450 characters so I apologize if my comments seem a little brief and general! After reviewing your child’s progress report please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions that you may have! I am so proud of each child for working very hard this term and look forward to our second term together!

Gifts for Kids
Thank you so much for sending in items for the Gifts for Kids program! The response was incredible! Camila will certainly have a wonderful holiday this year thanks to you kindness and generosity! Thank you! :)

Thank you Ethan for our very own awesome dreidels!

Homework
Homework will look a little different this week! The single, green paper coming home with your child today details their very important homework assignments! Enjoy!

Literacy
This week in Literacy we will be reading the story, Dear Juno by Soyung Pak. Through reading this story we will continue to discuss the unit question, “What does it mean to be creative?” We will also address the weekly question, “How many ways can we communicate?” This week we will also be discussing the genre of Realistic Fiction, practicing reading words with long o (o, oa, ow), applying the comprehension skill of drawing conclusions and utilizing the comprehension strategy of visualizing.

After earning our third bead jar celebration, the students voted on having an Elf on the Shelf for our classroom! Room 118's elf Fisbee arrived last week! We have been having so much fun finding him each morning!

Math
The children have been working very hard in math to apply the mental subtraction strategies explored in Topic 7 of our math program! This week we will be subtracting multiples of ten and solving problems with missing or extra information. As always we will continue to work on our addition and subtraction facts in class as well!

Star Student
Congratulations to Conor who was our Star Student last week! We loved learning more about Conor from his All About Me poster and from the pictures that he brought from home! We also really enjoyed seeing the very special trophy that he brought in to show us! Keep up the amazing work Conor! :)
