April 10, 2016

I hope everyone enjoys a fun and relaxing April Vacation! I am crossing my fingers that we will have some beautiful spring weather! Thank you so much for all of your help and support in making Room 118 a fantastic place to learn, teach and grow!

Monday morning yoga! Getting focused for a fun-filled week!

Biography Projects
This children have been working incredibly hard the last few weeks to complete research on important people from history! Last week students began to pick their own person that they would like to research as the next step of this unit! This research project will be a homework assignment. Be on the lookout for more information after April Vacation!

Literacy
This week in Literacy we will be reading the story, Bad Dog Dodger by Barbara Abercrombie. Through reading this story we will continue to discuss the unit question, “What does it mean to be responsible?” and will also explore the weekly question, “How can we be responsible family members?” This week we will also be reviewing the genre of Realistic Fiction, reading and writing words with silent consonants, applying the reading strategies of word structure and prior knowledge and identifying the plot and theme of a text.

Last week we finished our firefighter projects which include writing that describes the very dangerous job of a firefighter. After reading this piece we discussed as a class the importance of having a family fire plan at home. This might be a great time to review your family's fire plan with your child! As our text said, "Planning now can save lives later!"

Math
While we will continue to practice adding and subtracting three-digit numbers, we will be moving on to Topic 12 in our program which focuses on geometry! We will be exploring flat surfaces, edges and vertices, relating plane shapes to solid figures and exploring polygons and angles!

Science
In science we continue to learn about plants! This past week we learned about the stem and flower of a plant! Ask your child why these two plant parts are important to see what they have learned!

Mystery Reader!
Thank you so much to Mrs. Farley and Mrs. Larkin for being Mystery Readers in our classroom this week! We had so much fun! :)
