January 22, 2017

I hope that everyone is having a fantastic weekend! While last week was one day shorter than usual, we packed all four days full of fun in Room 118! Take a peek below to see what we were up to! :)

Using a new tool in one of our math centers called "Hot Dots"! Ask your child to tell you about this new activity and what they think about it!

Timeline Project
In Social Studies we will be learning all about timelines and will be making one of our very own in school! Attached to this weeks reading log, will be a blank timeline organizer. If possible, please help your child to complete six really important events that have happened in his/her life in chronological order. If timeline organizers could be returned to school by Friday that would be fantastic! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions! Thanks for all that you do! :)

Literacy
This week in Literacy we will be reading the story, A Weed is a Flower: The Life of George Washington Carver by Aliki. This is the last story in our third unit! This week we will conclude our discussion of the unit question, “What does it mean to be creative?” and will discuss the weekly question, “Where do creative ideas come from?” We will also learn about the genre of Biography, practice reading words with comparative endings, apply the comprehension skill of cause and effect and learn more about the comprehension strategy of monitoring and fixing up our understandings while reading!

Go Pats!

Social Studies
Last week we continued to discuss the very important life and work of Martin Luther King Jr.! The children were asked to write about a dream that they have for our country which we turned into a bulletin board for all to see! Ask your child to share what they learned about MLK and what their dreams for our country are!

Math
Last week in math we began Topic 9 which focuses on double digit subtraction! Just like addition, students will learn and practice a relatively new computation strategy that will provide them with a much deeper and clearer understanding of place value and the process of subtraction. In addition this strategy is called Partial Sums and in subtraction this strategy is called Partial Differences. See the picture below to see this strategy in action!

Star Student!
Congratulations to Madeline who was our Star Student last week! We loved learning more about Madeline from her All About Me poster and from the pictures that she brought from home! Keep up the amazing work Madeline! :)
