September 16, 2017

What a fantastic first full week of school we had! It's hard to believe that tomorrow is our 12th day of school together! Time really does fly when you are having fun! :)

Phone Extension Change
Over the summer Boyden School received a brand new phone system! With that upgrade, all staff phone extensions have been changed. My new phone extension at Boyden School is 5404! Please don't ever hesitate to contact me by phone, email, or note with any questions that you may have!

Afternoon Snack
This year second grade has the very first lunch of the day at 11:40AM! Because we eat lunch so early, our classroom has been having a snack time in both the morning and afternoon! Children are more than welcome to bring two snacks to school each day if they like to enjoy at both of these times! Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions!

Signing and thumb printing our classroom expectations poster!

Room 118 is Celebrating!!!
On Friday we filled our bead jar for the very first time! I am so proud of each and every child for working so hard on their behavior and for making such wonderful choices each day! Our class brainstormed a list of possible celebration ideas and voted on having a Pajama and Stuffed Animal Day! Children are invited to wear their pajamas and bring a stuffed animal to school this Tuesday, September 19th to celebrate! Keep up the amazing work!

Scholastic Book Order
Last week your child came home with a Scholastic book order for the month of September! If you are interested in ordering books for your child, all order forms and payment are due to school on Friday, September 29th! You can also place an order through the Scholastic Book website! More information about online ordering can be found on our classroom website under the Scholastic Book Order link! Happy Reading! :)

Shhhhhhh!!!!! It’s a Surprise
If possible, please help your child choose a shirt to send in for a project we will be working on for open house! Long sleeved shirts work best! All shirts will be returned unharmed after Open House is over! Thanks for your help!

Math game fun!

Literacy
This week in Literacy we will be reading the piece, Exploring Space with an Astronaut by Patricia J. Murphy. While reading this nonfiction text we will continue to discuss our unit question, “What can we learn from exploring new places and things?” We will also discuss the weekly question, “Why would anyone want to explore space?” This week we will also be exploring the genre of Expository Nonfiction, reviewing long vowels, applying the comprehension skills of identifying the main idea and details of a text and learning about the grammar topic of subjects!

Daily 5
Last week we began learning all about Daily 5! Daily 5 is a literacy center approach that provides students with the opportunity to build their reading and writing fluency, skills and stamina daily! We spent a great deal of time discussing how to pick a "just right book" and how to check our understanding when we read! We also looked at lots of different types of books and discussed which ones would be a great fit and which ones wouldn't! Ask your child to tell you what they learned this past week about Daily 5 and what their favorite part is so far!

Daily 5, Read to Self in action!

Math
This week in math we will be reviewing all of the concepts that were presented in Topic 1 of our math program and will take our very first test! We will then begin Topic 2, which focuses on addition strategies!
