September 23, 2017

We had so much fun on Tuesday celebrating our fantastic behavior and wonderful choices with a Pajama and Stuffed Animal Day! What a fabulous way to start a busy week! I am so proud of each and every child for continuing to put forth their best effort! Keep up the amazing job! :)

Shhhhhhh!!!!! It’s a Surprise
If possible, please help your child choose a shirt to send in for a project we will be working on for Open House! Long sleeved shirts work best! All shirts will be returned unharmed after Open House is over! Thanks for your help!

Open House 2017!

This Thursday is Boyden School’s annual Open House Night! All friends and family are welcome to attend! I look forward to meeting all that can make it then!

Afternoon Snack
This year second grade has the very first lunch of the day at 11:40AM! Because we eat lunch so early, our classroom has been having a snack time in both the morning and afternoon! Children are more than welcome to bring two snacks to school each day if they'd like to enjoy at both of these times! Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions!

Literacy
This week in Literacy we will be reading the story, Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night by Cynthia Rylant. Through reading this story we will be discussing the genre of realistic fiction, practicing reading words with consonant blends, identifying the characters and setting of a text and applying the comprehension strategy of monitoring our understandings while reading. We will also continue to discuss our unit question, “What can we learn from exploring new places and things?” as well as our weekly question, “What can we discover by exploring nature?”

Practicing our facts with XtraMath! This is a GREAT tool to use at home for students to practice math! Please see the letter that was sent home this week for more information!

Math
In math this week we will continue to review addition strategies and will also continue the math fact component of our math curriculum! Students have been completing various activities and playing games to practice their math facts in families! This week we will finish learning about the 5's family and will begin the 6's family!

Soon we are going to start our Guided Math centers! Guided Math is an approach that provides all instruction in small groups. When students are not working with a teacher to learn new skills or concepts, they are participating in math games that will build their fact fluency, completing projects that target key math concepts, and using the computer to practice skills learned in class! Guided Math is such a fun part of our day and allows me the opportunity to support and challenge students at their individual level. I am so excited to start Guided Math centers soon and hope that your child will enjoy them as much as I do!

Exploring math tools and our math tool bags!

Working on a "secret project" for Open House!

Adding the finishing touches to our, "Hopes and Dreams" projects!

Daily 5
Daily 5 is in full swing in Room 118! This week we continued to build our reading and writing stamina! We also learned about a new aspect of Daily 5 called, "Read to Someone". I am blown away by the amazing work that the children are doing during this time! Ask your child how they are feeling about Daily 5 and what their favorite activity is so far!
