October 15, 2017

Happy Sunday! I hope that everyone is having a great weekend! We have another busy week ahead in Room 118 with our field trip to Decordova Sculpture Park on Friday! I can't wait for another spectacular week in second grade! :)

This week we finished our Desert Brochures which showcased what we learned from reading the expository piece, "A Walk in the Desert"! Ask your child what they could observe and do in the desert to see all that they have learned!

Our Field Trip!
Our field trip to Decordova Sculpture Park is this Friday! I'm crossing my fingers that we will have a beautiful fall day! Tomorrow your child will come home with a letter that provides a bit more information about the trip! Please let me know if you have any questions!

Parent/Teacher Conferences
It's hard to believe that next week begins Parent/Teacher conferences! The online conference scheduler opened last week and will be active until the end of this week! If you are unable to make any of the time slots still available, please contact me as soon as possible! I'd be more than happy to meet during a time that is convenient for you! I look forward to conferencing with you soon! :)

Using iPads in Guided Math Workshop to practice math!

Media
A friendly reminder that our media day is Friday! Second graders are allowed to take out two library books as long as they are returned each week by Friday morning! Happy Reading! :)

Literacy
This week we will be reading the story, The Strongest One. This is the last story in our first unit of study! We will finish discussing the unit question, “What can we learn from exploring new places and things?” We will also review the phonics skill of consonant digraphs! Since we will be on our field trip on Friday we will take our spelling test on Thursday this week!

Math
This week we will continue to review subtraction strategies as presented in our third topic of study! Children will practice how to think addition to 10 and 18 to subtract, how to make a 10 to subtract and how to answer two-question problems! We will also start learning about the 7's fact family! Be on the lookout for 7's flashcards and the 7's math game coming home with your child soon!

Science
This week in science we started our unit on the properties of matter! To learn more about the properties of matter we participated in the Mystery Science experiment called, "The Mad Hatter". This lesson focused around the essential question, "Why do we need to wear clothes?" Students created their own hats out of very simple materials to learn more about the attributes of various resources. Ask your child what materials they used to make their hat and why they picked those materials to see all that they learned!
