October 8, 2018

I hope that everyone is enjoying a wonderful long weekend and finding time for a little fall fun! I look forward to another spectacular week in second grade! :)

Last week we started our writing curriculum by reading the story, The Best Story by Eileen Spinelli! Ask your child what the main character in this book learns about writing and what makes a great story to see what they've learned!

2nd Grade Field Trip 🚌
On Friday, October 19th the 2nd grade classes will be heading to Decordova Sculpture Park on our very first field trip of the year! If your child has not yet returned their permission slip, please have them do so ASAP so that they will be able to go on the trip with us! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions! Thank you so much!

Digital Citizenship Lessons with Mrs. Carroll! 💻
Last week we continued to review internet safety with our Technology Specialist, Mrs Carroll! She also took us on a "Virtual Field Trip" to the San Diego Zoo in California! We had so much fun viewing the "Live Cams" of a few different San Diego Zoo animals! Ask your child what their favorite animal we saw was and what they need to do to stay safe online to see what they have learned!

The Global Read Aloud 🌎
This year our class is participating in a project called The Global Read Aloud! The idea behind it is very simple; teachers around the world read the same book aloud to their students and then use technology to share the reading experience with these other classrooms! During the project, our class will be reading, A Boy Called Bat and connecting with students around the world who are reading the same book! I am so excited to be participating in this wonderful project with your child!

Literacy 📚
This week we will be reading the text, A Walk in the Desert by Caroline Arnold and will be discussing the questions, “What can we learn from exploring new places and things?” and “What can we learn by exploring the desert?” We will also discuss the genre of Expository Nonfiction, practice reading words with inflected endings, identify the main idea and details within a text and determine the structure of a story. If your child would like to practice their weekly spelling words using Spelling City, click here!

For the last few weeks our read alouds have been focusing on manners!

Daily 5 ✏
Daily 5 is in full swing in Room 118! Last week we continued to build our reading and writing stamina! We also learned about new aspects of Daily 5 called, "Read to Someone", "Word Work", and "Listen to Reading". I am blown away by the amazing work that the children are doing during this time! Ask your child how they are feeling about Daily 5 and what their favorite activity is!

Building "Read to Someone" Stamina! 👍

Word Work Fun!

Listening to Reading to Build our Fluency!

Participating in a "Silly Sentence Scramble" to Learn About Subjects and Predicates!

Math
This week in math children will practice adding three addends and adding with 10. We will take our topic 2 test by the end of the week and will begin our third topic next week which focuses on subtraction strategies! We will also continue the math fact component of our math curriculum! Students have been completing various activities and playing games to practice their math facts in families! This week we will finish learning about the 5's family and will begin the 6's family!

Last week we started Guided Math centers! Guided Math is an approach that provides all instruction in small groups. When students are not working with a teacher to learn new skills or concepts, they are participating in math games that will build their fact fluency, completing projects that target key math concepts, and using the computer to practice skills learned in class! Guided Math is such a fun part of our day and allows me the opportunity to support and challenge students at their individual level.

XtraMath is a GREAT tool to use at home for students to practice math! Please see the letter that was sent home last week for more information!

Science
Last week in science we started our unit on water! We participated in an experiment called Paper Mountains to learn about how water moves and travels! Ask your child to answer the question, "Where would you end up if you floated down a river?" to see what they learned from this lesson and experiment!

🌟Star Student🌟
Congratulations to our very first Star Student of the school year, William! We loved learning more about Will from his All About Me poster and from the pictures and show and tell items he brought in to share! Keep up the awesome work Will! You are such an important and valued member of our Room 118 family!
