November 14, 2021

It was another busy and fun week in Room 118! We really dove into our Nonfiction units in Reader's and Writer's workshop, continued to grow our understandings of place value in math and learned all about the important holiday of Veteran's Day in Social Studies! I look forward to the week ahead and can't wait to see what new learning we will do and what new fun we will have! πŸ™‚

The students worked SO incredibly hard during our Writer's Workshop unit on Narrative, Small Moment stories! While I will be keeping some of the students' writing for their school portfolios, be on the lookout for a mini writing portfolio coming home with your child this week! Included will be some of the pieces they worked on during this unit! Keep up the amazing work writers! ✏

Writer's helping other writers edit their work during Writer's Workshop! #teamworkmakesthedreamwork

This week we started a new unit in Writer's Workshop, which focuses on Nonfiction writing! Students selected a topic that they knew some information about and began writing nonfiction books of their very own! Way to go writers!

This week we learned all about Veteran's Day! Ask your child what this very important holiday is all about to see what they learned through the read alouds, videos and activities we completed this week!

Working together to grow our place value knowledge in math!

FUNdations
This week we will continue to explore the concepts presented in the 5th unit of our FUNDations program. Now that your child is comfortable with the closed syllable type and suffix endings, I am going to review how to combine syllables to form multisyllabic words. Your child will put two closed syllables together, such as bathtub. I will also be introducing the new suffix endings -ful, -ment, -ish, -ness, -less, -able, and -en.

Reader's Workshop πŸ“š
This week we will continue to grow our understandings of how to read nonfiction books by using text features to notice and understand key words, using context to build knowledge of unknown words, and using strategic and flexible thinking to solve tricky words.

Writer's Workshop πŸ–Š
This week in Writer's Workshop we will learn craft moves from mentor authors, squeeze our brains to think of everything that we know about a topic and set goals and make plans for our writing.

Math πŸ–©
In math this week we continue to explore place value by counting backwards to subtract tens, finding parts of 100, subtracting on a hundred chart, subtracting multiples of ten and solving problems with missing or extra information.

Science/Social Studies 🌎
This week in Science we will continue our exploration of animals by participating in an experiment that answers the question, "Why would a wild animal visit a playground?" In this lesson, students will solve the mystery of why a group of wild bighorn sheep would leave their usual desert habitat to visit a second, very different habitat: a local playground. In the activity, Habitat Scavenger Hunt, students will record observations of the diversity of life found in the desert and the playground, as well as the physical characteristics of each location. Students will combine these observations to create an understanding of how the living and non-living parts of a habitat support the animals that live there.
