It was another very productive and fun week in first grade! In FUNdations we continued to tap, read, and write words with digraphs, in Writer's Workshop we started our unit on "How To" writing and in Reader's Workshop we launched our new unit called, "Word Detectives"! I hope all of my Room 114 friends have a fabulous, fun-filled weekend! I can't wait to see everyone on Monday! π
Monday was all about spiders in Room 114! We read the book, "Agggg Spider!" and then created a graph to share whether or not we would want a spider as a pet! We also wrote about this topic during Writer's Workshop! To end the day we went on a spider ring scavenger hunt! π·
On Tuesday we hopped on a school bus and reviewed bus expectations and emergency exit procedures! The children did a beautiful job of listening politely and showing self-control while on the bus!
So many of our read alouds this week were provided by the children! I LOVE how excited they are to share their favorite stories with the class! Many of the books shared had wonderful messages about individuality and taking care of the environment! Way to go readers!
On Wednesday we had our bi-weekly visit from Mrs. Tilton! This week we talked about all of the things we are thankful for! We will continue to talk about this very important topic during the whole month of November!
FUNdations got a face lift this week! In an effort to increase student engagement and to differentiate instruction to best support all learners, we are going to be participating in our FUNdations curriculum through a workshop model. Watch the video below to learn a bit more about what this looks like in our classroom! #puttingthefuninFUNdations!
Thursday was a beautiful day to go outside and observe our class tree for science! π
It was a blast kicking off our new reading unit this week! In this unit we will be learning and practicing the strategies that good readers apply when trying to figure out unknown words! Watch the video below to see how this new unit was introduced to the class! (I apologize for the awkward camera angle!)
Happy Birthday to Anthony, who celebrated his birthday on Monday! π

Congratulations to Charlie who was our Star Student last week! We loved learning more about Charlie from his All About Me poster and from the pictures that he brought from home! Keep up the awesome work Charlie! You are such an important and valued member of our Room 114 family! ❤

FUNdations
This week in FUNdations we will be officially finishing unit 3 in our program, which has focused on tapping, reading and writing words with the digraphs ch, th, sh, wh and ck. On Tuesday we will begin our next unit, which will review spelling words with the bonus letters: ff, ll ss and zz. After receiving a short, daily mini lesson, students will be practicing the phonics concepts that are a just right fit for them through games and activities in a workshop model.
Reader's Workshop π
We will really dig into our unit "Word Detectives" this week! We will be discussing how word detectives use everything that they know to solve tricky words and they check their words slowly!
Writer's Workshop π
This week in Writer's Workshop we will focus on "How To" writing and work hard to write a "How To" of our very own!
Math π©
This week in math we will continue to practice creating and writing addition and subtraction facts to create fact families. We will also learn effective, efficient strategies to solve addition and subtraction equations.
